AI search changed the results page. How to get cited, not buried

Answer engines now resolve a third of commercial queries before anyone clicks. The brands doing well are the ones the models quote, and that's a position you can work towards.

The click is no longer a given

For two decades, SEO meant one thing. Rank on page one and earn the click. That deal is changing. Answer engines now resolve a growing share of commercial queries inside the result itself. The user gets their answer and never visits a site.

This isn't the end of SEO. It's a shift in what you're working towards. Not just the ranking, but the citation. The brands doing well today are the ones the models quote when they write those answers.

How to become the cited source

Citations follow authority and clear structure. Three things help:

  • Be clear about what you are: make it obvious what you do and what you're known for.
  • Answer-ready content: lead with the answer, then support it. That's the format models prefer to lift.
  • Structured data: markup that tells machines exactly what they're reading.
Ranking gets you seen by people. Citation gets you quoted by the tool that's increasingly answering for them.

Track it, structure for it, and earn the authority behind it. Do that and you'll be the name in the answer, not the link nobody clicks.
